Pope to Poland

"I want to be to Christianity what Gretzky was to hockey, what Beckham is to soccer, what Jordan was to basketball, what Martin Luther King was to African-American rights, what the Pope was to Poland. I want to be that to Christianity."
- an evangelical minister quoted in this article

Does anyone else think that saying that is, at its core, antithetical to Christian teaching?

The whole point of christianity is that we can NOT be that. Jesus already did. It's intresting you posted that, it's been running through my mind like crazy lately. We are not supposed to be this. We are supposed to glorify him. Sometimes we get so confused as to what we are supposed to be and do as followers. But we can't be the best... He is. When he was on the cross, and he said "it is finished", he meant it... he did it, we can't. Let's not try and steal his glory.

I love you buddy, can't wait to have you as my guest this summer.

Just reading the quote I thought that this was probably just some misguided fellow with his heart in the right place. But upon scanning the article I think that indeed this is antithetical to Christian teaching because it is an egotistical statement. If it is about you then you aren't doing it right. This guy lacks humility and I doubt meek is even in his vocabulary. Well he can be first among Christians for all I care because you know what they say about the first and the last.
